FAQ - Wool Yarn
What is wool yarn?
Wool yarn is made from the fleece of sheep. This natural fibre is popular for its durability, warmth, and moisture-wicking properties. What are the different types of wool yarn?
The different types of wool yarn include cashmere, alpaca, mohair, merino, pashmina, Shetland, shahtoosh, and lambswool. Merino is among the most common wool yarn available. What are the benefits of using wool yarn?
Wool yarn is known for its insulation, durability, and sustainability. It’s a very versatile, soft, and breathable fibre. How do I care for wool yarn?
Many of the wools we encounter today are easy-care, meaning that there’s not a long list of conditions you need to meet to take care of it. However, there are a few things to remember. You want to avoid “shocking” the wool (putting it in hot water suddenly), as this will cause the fibres to contract and could shrink all your hard work! Washing your wool on a cool/warm, gentle cycle with a specific wool detergent will help maintain the wool’s integrity over time. Most modern washing machines have ‘wool’ as an available setting. What needle size should I use with wool yarn?
The best knitting needle size for each project differs based on what specific yarn you’re using for that project and what “look” you’re going for (eg. lacey and airy vs tight and chunky). However, there are some general guidelines to consider. Sweaters that are designed to fit the body benefit from a 4mm needle and an 8 ply yarn, while bulkier fashion sweaters might suit a 12 ply with a 7mm needle. Scarves and hats can be made with any ply. A good starting point is 8 ply (4mm), but the thicker you’d like either, the larger needle you’ll need. Blankets are much the same, and things like baby blankets would work best in 4 ply (~3mm). Socks are typically made from 2-4 ply yarn so a 3mm would work quite well. What is the best wool yarn for knitting sweaters, socks, scarves, hats and blankets?
The brand and type of wool you choose is totally up to you! From whisper soft alpaca, sturdy pure wool, smooth merino, or creamy cashmere, there are so many different wools to help you achieve your desired look. The level of care required for different wools can vary, so make sure to consider the care instructions and what sounds right for you.Showing 25 - 27 of 27 products
